Top 5 gangster movies of all time
64
1. Godfather
Of course number ONE had to be "The Godfather". This is by far in my opinion the best gangster movie of all time. It was based on the book "The Godfather" written by Mario Puzo. The film was directed by Francis Ford Cappolla and is about a organised crime family called "The Corleone family". The story is based on the youngest son Michael Corleone, from not being involved in his family's business to end up being the head of the family.
2. Godfather part II
Number TWO had to be "Godfather Part II", this is the sequel of the 1st movie. "Godfather part II" is pretty much two movies running at the same time, the first part is about Michael Corleone running the business in the present time and the 2nd part is looking back at Vito Corleone's life and how he became "The Godfather".
The Godfather trilogy
"The Godfather Trilogy" box set is what I would recommend getting, its a lot more cost effective to get the Trilogy compared to getting the three movies individually. I have not yet watched the Blu-ray version, but the normal DVD is amazing quality. The box sets include a bonus material disc, which has a documentary on the making of the films, deleted scenes from all three movies, cast rehearsals and also the theatrical trailers.
And if you like the movies... you must read the book.
3. Scarface
THIRD in my top 5 has to be "Scarface". Al Pacino plays Tony Montana a Cuban who moves to USA who is willing to do anything to get to the top, we see his rise and his fall. The movie is directed by Brian De Palma and the screen play was written by Oliver Stone. This movie has some of the most memorable quotes out of all the movies I have ever watched.

Scarface memorable quotes (if for any reason you cant hear it click on it twice to go onto the Youtube site and it works fine).
4. Carlito's way
FOURTH in my top 5 has to been "Carlito's Way", this film is based on the book "After Hours", but used the title of the first novel to avoid it being confused with Martin Scorsese's 1985 film of the same name. The movie focuses on Carlito's activities once he is released from prison.
5. Godfellas
FIFTH on my list has to be "Goodfellas". The film follows the rise and fall of three gangsters, spanning three decades. It is based on the book wiseguy which was written by Nicholas Pileggi, he also co-wrote the screenplay for the film with Martin Scorsese, Martin was also the director. Although this movie is serious there are a lot of parts in the movie which can be seen as comical. I think the performances of Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco are great.
A litlle bit of general knowledge about the film, the F word was used over 300 times.
The quality of the Blu-Ray disc over the DVD is immense. The picture is brighter, the colours more vivid and the scenes have more clarity and detail. But on the other hand the DVD is still pretty amazing in comparison to the VHS.
This book, of course, is the basis for the superb movie, so is definetley worth reading.
